Istoria Bisericii este o parte importantă a credinţei creştine ortodoxe. Creştinii ortodocşi se definesc în mod deosebit prin continuitatea lor cu cei care au trăit înaintea lor, aceia care au fost primii care au primit şi propovăduit adevărul lui Iisus Hristos lumii, cu aceia care au ajutat la formularea şi exprimarea formulelor şi cultului de credinţă, şi cu aceia care au continuat să urmeze neschimbata, dar totuşi tot timpul dinamică, Sfânta Tradiţie a Bisericii Ortodoxe.

Perioada Noului Testament - cronologie
- 46 î.Hr. Iulius Caesar instituie Calendarul Iulian.
- 27 î.Hr.-180 d.Hr. Pax Romana.
- 20 î.Hr. Irod cel Mare începe o renovare şi mărire importantă a celui de-al doilea templu; principalele conflicte interne între iudei în timpul perioadei târzii a celui de-al doilea templu (cc. 168 î.Hr.-70 d.Hr.) au avut loc între farisei şi saduchei, la fel ca şi între esenieni şi zeloţi.
- cc.4 î.Hr. Naşterea lui Hristos în Betleem; Omorârea celor 14,000 de Sfinţi prunci la Betleem şi în împrejurimi.
- 1 Este scrisă Înălţarea lui Moise, o apocrifă iudaică.
- 6 Recensământul lui Quirinius; Provincia Iudeea, cu capitala la Cezareea, este creeată sub administrare romană directă, incluzând Samaria, Iudeea şi Idumeea.

- The division of Church History into separate eras as done here will always be to some extent arbitrary, though it was attempted to group periods according to major watershed events.
