Sanctitatea Sa '''Dimitrie I''' (gr. Πατριάρχης Δημήτριος Α'), pe numele de mirean Dimitrios Papadopulos, a fost [[Patriarh Ecumenic]] al [[Constantinopol]]ului între anii 1972 şi 1991.
Demetrios Papadopoulos s-a născut la 8 septembrie 1914 în [[Constantinopol]]. A studiat mai întâi la școala greacă din Therapia, iar apoi și-a continuat studiile la [[Seminarul Teologic din Halki (Turcia)|Seminarul Teologic din Halki]] între anii 1931 și 1937. După terminarea studiilor teologice a fost [[Hirotonie|hirotonit]] [[diacon]] la [[25 aprilie]] 1937 (în sâmbăta dinaintea [[Intrarea Domnului în Ierusalim|Floriilor]]). From October 1937 to August 1938, he served as the diocese Secretary and Preacher of the Holy Metropolis of Edessa. Between May 1939 and June 1945 he served as deacon and [[preot]] in Ferikioi (Φερίκιοϊ). He was ordained to the priesthood on [[March 29martie]], 1942, and continued serving the Ferikioi Church for another three years. He then served as the pastor of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Tehran, Iran, from 1945 to 1950. During this time, with the honorary approval of the Shah, he taught Ancient Greek at the University of Tehran for one year. After his stint in Tehran, he returned to Ferikioi to serve as Head of Community from 1950 to 1964.
On [[23 iulie]], 1964, he was elected [[Episcop titular]] of Eleia (Ελαίας) by the Holy [[Sinod]] of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. On [[9 august]] he was consecrated [[episcop]]. He served as Hierarchal Vicar and Patriarchal Overseer (Αρχιερατικός) of the parishes in Ferikioy, Haskioy, and the Annunciation Church of Tataoula (Ταταούλων). He remained there until he was elected [[mitropolit]] of Imvros and Tenedos on [[15 februarie]], 1972. Shortly thereafter and following the death of [[Athenagoras Atenagora I (SpyrouSpirou) of Constantinopleal Constantinopolului|Patriarch Patriarhului Athenagoros I]], he was elected by the Holy Synod of the [[Biserica Ortodoxă a Constantinopolului|Ecumenical Patriarchate]] as Archbishop of Constantinople, [[New Rome]], and Ecumenical Patriarch on [[16 iulie]] of that year. He was enthroned on [[18 iulie]], 1972, at the Patriarchal [[Cathedral Church of St George (Istanbul)|Church of St. George]] in the [[Fanar]] district of Istanbul.
He called the first of three Pan-Orthodox Meetings for the preparation of the Pan-Orthodox Synod at the Orthodox Center of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Chambesy, Switzerland. He accepted at the Ecumenical Patriarchate two [[Archbishop of Canterbury|Archbishops of Canterbury]], and on [[30 noiembrie]], 1979, [[Pope]] [[John Paul II]] with whom he proclaimed the establishment of the official theological dialogue between the Orthodox and the [[Roman Catholic]] Church.
