Preasfinţitul Alexander Golitzin de Toledo

Preasfinţitul Alexander (Golitzin) este episcop de Toledo şi al Episcopiei Bulgare a Bisericii Ortodoxe din America, urmându-i Înaltpreasfinţitului Arhiepiscop Chiril Yoncev, păstor al acestei dioceze între anii 1964-2007. PS Alexander este un cunoscut teolog, specialist în Patrologie, Ascetică şi mistică.

Viaţa

Alexander Golitzin s-a născut în 1948, la Los Angeles în Statele Unite ale Americii. Tatăl său provenea dintr-o familie nobiliară rusă, refugiată în Statele Unite ca urmare a Revoluţiei bolşevice, iar mama lui era originară din Bornemouth. A fost botezat în tradiţia ortodoxă rusă. Şi-a început educaţia ortodoxă în biserica Sf. Inocenţiu din Tarzana, California, o parohie unde slujbele se ţineau în mod regulat în limba engleză. Şi-a continuat studiile la University of California Berkeley, de unde şi-a luat licenţa (BA) în Filologie (Limba engleză). A obţinut un master în Teologie (M.Div.) la Seminarul Sf. Vladimir din Crestwood, New York, apoi şi-a luat doctoratul (D.Phil.) în Teologie la Universitatea Oxford în 1980, cu o teză despre Sf. Dionisie Areopagitul, avându-l drept coordonator pe episcopul Kallistos Ware. În timpul studiilor doctorale, a petrecut doi ani în Grecia şi un an la Muntele Athos, în preajma stareţului Emilianos de la Mănăstirea Simonos Petras. A fost hirotonit diacon în 1981 şi preot în 1984. A intrat în monahism în 1986, primind ulterior rangul de arhimandrit.

În 1990 a devenit profesor de Teologie la Marquette University din Milwaukee, Wisconsin, unde a continuat să predea în următorii douăzeci de ani, poziţie pe care o deţine până în prezent. Sfera cercetărilor sale cuprinde începuturile tradiţiei ascetice şi mistice creştine şi evoluţia acesteia în lumea de limbă greacă şi siriacă, fiind interesat în special de continuităţile şi paralelele dintre aceasta şi iudaismul celui de-al doilea Templu şi respectiv iudaismul rabinic.

A vizitat România de două ori, ultima dată în 2007, când a ţinut prelegerea: „THEOPHANEIA:Manifestarea divină în tradiţiile celui de-al doilea Templu, creştinism şi rabinism” (New Europe College, Bucureşti).[1]

Pe 4 octombrie 2011, membrii Sfântului Sinod al Episcopilor Bisericii Ortodoxe din America l-a ales pe arhim. Alexander ca episcop pentru scaunul vacant al Episcopiei Bulgare a Bisericii Ortodoxe din America. Pe 5 mai 2012 a fost hirotonit episcop de Toledo şi al Episcopiei Bulgare în cadrul unei liturghii arhiereşti oficiate la Catedrala Ortodoxă Sf. Gheorghe din Rossford, Ohio.
