Chemarea celor 12 apostoli

Apostolul este trimisul lui Iisus Hristos pentru a propăvadui Evanghelia şi adevărul despre Mesia, cel răstignit pentru mântuirea noastră.

Cuvântul apostol provine din cuvîntul grec αποστολος, însemnînd "acela care este trimis". La origine este un termen militar, însemnând un atac produs de o forţă militară, de obicei formată din câţiva soldaţi, împotriva unui inamic. În contextul creştin, apostolul se referă la ucenicii care răspândesc Evanghelia lui Iisus Hristos.

Soborul Sfinţilor 12 apostoli

La început, Dumnezeu a chemat 12 ucenici în obştea bisericii, dându-le misiunea de a propăvadui adevărul. Potrivit Evangheliei, Iuda Iscarioteanul a fost unul dintre primii apostoli, dar odată cu lepădarea sa de credinţă şi moartea lui, a fost înlocuit de apostolul Matei. Soborul Sfinţilor 12 apostoli este 30 iunie. Numele apostolilor sunt enumerate la Matei 10:2, Marcu 3:14, Luca 6:12, Faptele Apostolilor 1:13, 26.

Dupa înlocuirea lui Iuda Iscarioteanul, lista celor 12 apostoli este următoarea :

Simon, zis Petru - (29 Iunie şi 16 Ianuarie) răstignit pe cruce Andrei cel Întâi chemat - (30 Noiembrie) fratele lui Petru; răstignit pe cruce Iacov (fiul lui Zevedei) - (30 Aprilie) zis ‚Cel Mare’ ; decapitat Ioan Teologul - (26 Septembrie şi 8 Mai) fratele lui Iacov (fiul lui Zevedei) Filip - (14 Noiembrie) răstignit pe cruce Bartolomeu - (11 Iunie şi 25 August) zis şi Nathaniel; răstignit, jupuit şi decapitat

Toma - (6 Octombrie) s-a savârşit fiind pătruns cu cinci suliţi Matei - (16 Noiembrie) care şi Levi se zice , fratele lui Iacov; s-a sfârşit ars de viu Iacov (fiul lui Alfeu) - (9 octombrie) răstignit pe cruce Iuda - (19 Iunie) numit şi Leveu supranumit Tadeu, fratele lui James fratele lui Dumnezeu; răstignit pe cruce Simion Zilotul - (10 Mai) zis şi Cananitul ; răstignit pe cruce Matia - (9 August) în locul lui Iuda Iscarioteanul; omorât cu pietre şi decapitat

Cei 70 Apostoli

Cei Şaptezeci apostoli sunt ucenicii aleşi de Dumnezeu (descriere în [[Evanghelia dupa Luca|Luca] 10:1-16) alături de cei Doisprezece şi trimişi să predice. Dupa o vreme, cei Doisprezece apostoli au mai adăugat câţiva celor Şaptezeci pentru a predica Evanghelia. Deşi în cele din urmă numărul lor a depăşit şaptezeci, toţi vor fi pomeniţi ca "cei Şaptezeci Apostoli" . Soborului sfinţilor măriţilor apostoli, cei şaptezeci la număr este 4 Ianuarie.

Other Apostles

The Apostle Paul (June 29) is also referred to as an apostle, though he is not one of the Twelve or of the Seventy. Other missionary saints are also referred to as apostles, though usually not as an initial title, but rather as an epithet, e.g., "Apostle to the North" (though some regard this usage as not traditionally Orthodox). Further, other saints have the epithet "Equal-to-the-Apostles" (in Greek, Ισαποστολος), usually because of their significant work in building up the Church. St. Paul shares the collective feast day with the Twelve Great Apostles. He was beheaded in Rome during the reign of Emporer Nero.
