Termenul de origine slavonă sobor („adunați împreună”, synaxis în grecește) se poate referi la următoarele:

  • În general, orice adunare a credincioșilor sau clerului Bisericii Ortodoxe pentru scopuri liturgice sau administrative, cum ar fi un sinod sau o slujbă; exemple concrete:
    • o slujbă în sobor este o slujbă la care slujesc mai mulți clerici;
    • soborul mănăstirii este întreaga obște a mănăstirii adunată/ convocată;
    • în Biserica Ortodoxă Rusă, soborul este o adunare de cler și laici împreună, sau un sinod la care participă și laici/ mireni.

Derivate

În limba română bisericească, sobor a mai dat și derivatele:

  • „sobornicesc” - întemeiat pe hotărârile sinoadelor ecumenice;
  • „sobornicească” - este traducerea (inexactă) în Crez în limba română a grecescului katholiki (care are în principal sensul de „deplinătate a credinței”);
  • „sobornicitate” - sobornicitatea este o însușire a Bisericii prin care se arată că este destinată să cuprindă toată lumea.
