Dorotei este un nume grecesc purtat de multe personalități și sfinți de-a lungul timpului. În gracă Δωρόθεος înseamnă „darul lui Dumnezeu” de la δῶρον (dōron), "dar" și θεός (Theós), "Dumnezeu". Semnificația numelui este aceeași cu cel de Teodor, dar cu cele două vocabule inversate.
