The Fifth Ecumenical Council took place in Constantinople in 553 AD, and is also known as the Second Council of Constantinople.

History

The fifth of the seven Ecumenical Councils dealt with the following:

  • Reinterpreting the Chalcedonian decrees from an Alexandrian point of view
  • Explaining more constructively the two natures of Christ and how they form a single Person

Among the anathemas made by the Council were those against parts of the teaching of Origen.

Commemoration

The Holy Fathers of the Fifth Ecumenical Council are commemorated on July 25 and also on the 9th Sunday after Pentecost the Sunday of the Fathers of the First Six Councils.
