În Biserica Ortodoxă există un sistem bine structurat de formule de adresare către/despre un cleric sau monah, care, deşi au luat în timp un aspect protocolar sau de autoritate, sunt în fapt o mărturie de stimă şi respect pentru slujirea sau lucrarea pe care un cleric sau monah o face în Biserică, precum şi un semn extern prin care este recunoscută lucrarea harului preoţiei, episcopatului etc.
